Crochet Quiz: January 2022
2022 is in full swing, and as such, the Crochet Quiz is back!
If you're a fan of all things crochet and would like to test your knowledge, learn something new, and have a bit of fun - this Crochet Quiz is for you!
Previously called Crochet Trivia Tuesday and held sporadically throughout the year in 2021, the Crochet Quiz will now officially be held on Instagram on the last Friday of each month. By taking the quiz on Instagram, you can play live with other Crocheters from around the world by answering multiple choice questions via my Instagram stories, sharing your results and comparing your scores.
But do not fret, if you missed the quiz on Instagram it will be posted here on my blog the following Tuesday for you to try whenever you like. You can also find all the previous crochet quizzes posted on my blog, just in case you're in the mood for more than one round of crochet trivia!
There is one extra surprise for you this year if you would prefer to play along on Instagram. Each month the quiz runs, I'll be running a giveaway alongside the quiz. The giveaway will put you in the running to win some fun crochet freebies and it is not based on your quiz score! As long as you follow the requirements in the Instagram competition post on the day, participate in the quiz, and share your score, you'll go into the draw to win!
If you are less inclined to share your score however, you can play along either via the Google form which will score your answers in real-time, or if you prefer a good old paper and pen just keep scrolling on this page and write your answers to the questions down as you scroll. The answers are revealed at the end of this blog post, and there is a warning picture before you get there to avoid any cheating! 😉

Crochet Quiz Answers
Q1. What section of the crochet hook determines the size of the hook?
C) Shank
If you answered C, well done! You must know your crochet hook anatomy really well! The shank, otherwise known as the shaft of a crochet hook is what determines the size of your hook. Essentially, a 3mm crochet hook has a 3mm shank/shaft.
Q2. In the image below, what type of crochet hook hold is being used?
B) Pencil hold
If you answered B Pencil hold, you are correct! The image below is of the ‘pencil hold’ one of the two most popular ways people hold their crochet hooks. Can you guess what the other one is? If not, you can learn how to hold your crochet hook here.
Q3. What type of crochet hook is pictured below?
A) Tunisian crochet hook
The picture below is indeed a Tunisian crochet hook! I’ve personally never tried Tunisian crochet, but would love to one day. If you’re curious about the various crochet hook types (there are quite a few), I found this really helpful blog post online by Create for Less here.
Q4. When crocheting rows of Double Crochet stitches (US terms) how many chains will most commonly be in your turning chain?
A) 3
Now, this was a bit of a trick question because in a lot of patterns I’ve seen designers often use 2 chains for the turning chain, however technically 2 chains fit best with a half double crochet (half treble in the UK) and 3 chains fit best for a double crochet stitch. There’s an amazing pin I found on Pinterest which visually explains this so well, you can check it out here.

If you answered D, Amigurumi Treasures 2, you were correct! This is the latest pattern book that has been released by crochet designer, Erinna Lee. Her creations are honestly so adorable. If you’d like to purchase Amigurumi Treasures 2, you can buy it here.

C) Magic loop
Well done if you answered C! The magic circle is known by a couple of different names, one of which is the Magic Loop. Fun fact, it can also be called the Magic Ring. Karen from Conquer Crochet has a brilliant YouTube video showing you exactly how it’s done which you can watch here.

A) Magic knot
You must be a pro crocheter if you got this one right! I only discovered this technique quite recently (and I am by no means a pro crocheter!). The Magic Knot is a really brilliant technique you can use to join two strands of yarn from two different balls of yarn. Bella Coco has a fab YouTube video (it’s the one I used to learn) on the Magic knot here.
Q8. What is the name of the crochet designer who is renowned for designing miniatures like the one below?
A) Kwannie Cheng
Well done for getting this one right. This one would’ve been easy if you caught my interview with Kwannie Cheng. Kwannie Cheng is an absolutely amazing crocheter who is famous for designing little miniatures. Everything from caravans to doll house furniture. I definitely recommend checking out her creations online!
Q9. What term is used to describe the way the yarn pictured below has been wound/wrapped?
B) Skein
For anyone who completed the quiz on my Instagram stories, you’ll notice that I made a boo boo (a mistake! 😢) with this question when I uploaded it (I’m kicking myself now that I’ve realised, and I am so sorry). The correct answer for this question is B Skein (which rhymes with 'rain’ - how appropriate! haha!). There are so many articles online regarding the way yarn is wound, and there are actually many more than just the three - hank, skein, and ball. If you’d like to learn more, there’s a really good article by interweave here.
Q10. What number of stitches are you least likely to start a magic circle with?
D) 2
If you answered 2, you are correct! I have never seen a magic circle that started with 2 stitches, however if anyone has ever seen a pattern that requires a magic circle with 2 stitches, I would honestly love to see it!
