Crochet slip knot tutorial
A slip knot is one of the first things beginner crocheters learn how to do. It is a type of knot that crocheters use to attach the yarn to their crochet hooks, so they can start crocheting.
This crochet slip knot tutorial for beginners will show you how to attach yarn to your crochet hook and so you can start crocheting right away.
But first, it’s important you know that there are a few different methods you can use to make a slip knot for crochet. All the different techniques result in the same outcome, but you may find one way is easier for you than another. After all, we’re all different!
As such, I’ve added some additional slip knot step-by-step tutorials at the end of this post from other crocheters who do their slip knots a little differently to me.
In the first instance, I highly recommend trying a few of the different slip knot techniques. They won’t take long, I promise. This way you can find the crochet slip knot method that works best for you.

Crochet slip knot
This is the method I use to tie a slip knot for crochet. This is the first technique I ever learned, and it’s stuck with me ever since.
You will need yarn and a crochet hook for this slip knot technique. Please note that in these crochet slip knot tutorial photos, I am using worsted weight yarn and a 4mm crochet hook. However, you can use whatever yarn and corresponding hook size you prefer.
You’ve got them? Great! Let’s get started.
Step 1: Find your yarn tail and move it in a clockwise direction so it sits over the working yarn (the yarn tail closer to the ball). This movement will form a circle shape in the yarn as shown in the image below.

Step 2: Insert your crochet hook under the yarn loop and bring it up through the circle.

Step 3: Reach your crochet hook over to pick up the working yarn (the section of yarn that is closest to your ball of yarn). You will need to hold the yarn circle in place for this step as shown in the image below.

Step 4: Pull the yarn your crochet hook is attached to through the circle.

Step 5: Use your fingers to pull the two yarn strands of yarn that appear on each side of your crochet hook (the yarn tail and working yarn). This will tighten the slip knot.

Step 6: The last slip knot step! Now pull the working yarn (the yarn strand closest to the ball of yarn) so the slip knot moves towards the crochet hook shank (the straight part of the crochet hook). This will tighten your slip knot so it sits nicely against your crochet hook.
In this position, you want the slip knot to touch the crochet hook so it’s secure. However, you don’t want to pull the yarn too tightly, as the yarn still needs to be able to slide back and forth on your hook so you can crochet.
