Free Crochet Ghost Pattern
Casper Cuddles is a free crochet ghost pattern and an ideal baby gift for the Halloween season.
This free crochet ghost pattern is the first lovey pattern I’ve ever made, so it is quite a simple make. While you don’t need to be an expert crocheter to make this Halloween project, I would recommend having some prior knowledge and experience of crochet. You will also need to be comfortable reading written crochet patterns.

Casper Cuddles Crochet Pattern Information
Materials needed
Here’s what you’ll need to crochet Casper cuddles:
Yarn: Aran / Worsted weight yarn in the following colours and amounts:
A - White (77 grams = 130 m/ 142 yds)
B - Grey (12 grams = 21 m/23 yds)
C - Black (17 grams = 29 m/32 yds)
Crochet hook: sizes 3.5mm & 4mm
Other materials:
- Stuffing
- Needle
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Pins
- Safety eyes size 12 mm (optional - if you’d prefer to use safety eyes rather than the crocheted eyes)
- Black embroidery thread
Gauge
Gauge is not required, however my gauge was as follows.
Amigurumi (Ghost Head):
5 cm x 5 cm = 12 rows x 11 sc stitches
Comforter (Blanket):
5 cm x 5 cm = 4 rows x 8 dc stitches
Lovey Size
Using the hook sizes and yarn specified within this pattern, the completed comforter is 24 cm / 9.5" high x 38 cm / 15" wide.
Crochet Pattern Abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US terms in English only.
R# - Row/round number
st - Stitch
ch - Chain
sl st - Slip stitch
sc - Single crochet
dc - Double crochet
inc - Increase
mc - Magic circle
sk - Skip
[...] x ... - Repeat the sequence of stitches in brackets x-times
(...) - Total number of stitches at the end of each row/round
Additional Crochet Pattern Notes & Top Tips
Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
Eyes: In this pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or crocheted eyes. There are instructions in the pattern for both. If you choose crocheted eyes, you will use black yarn which is counted in the amount of black yarn required.
Working in rounds: The ghost head top and base is worked in continuous rounds, however the comforter requires a join at the end of each round.
Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
Invisible finish: Recommended for ghost head top and base, but not required. Image tutorial of an invisible finish is included within the PDF pattern.

Casper Cuddles Crochet Pattern
Blanket
Start with Colour A yarn & 4 mm hook.
Start: 6 ch, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring. Work R1 in the ring. Alternatively, create a mc with R1 stitches.
Please note: your first ch-3 in each of the following rounds is counted as a double crochet, however corner chains are not counted in the total stitch count.
Joining technique: There are two options for how you can join at the end of each round as follows. Choose the option you like best.
Option 1: Join to the top of your ch-3 and continue crocheting as stated.
Option 2: Skip ch-3 and join to your 1st dc. Make the first two stitches of the next round (3 ch & 1 dc) in the same stitch and continue crocheting as stated.
R1: 3 ch (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc, ch 2, [3 dc, ch 2] x 5, sl st to join (18)
At this point, you should have 6 ch-2 spaces.
R2: 3 ch, 2 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc. [3 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc] x 5, sl st to join (30)
R3: 3 ch, 3 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc. [5 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc] x 5, 1 dc, sl st to join (42)
R4: 3 ch, 4 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc. [7 dc, in ch-2 space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc] x 5, 2 dc, sl st to join (54)
R5 - R11: Continue working the same pattern as previous rounds outlined below.
Start with 3 ch
1 dc in each dc around. Please note: St count for your 1st side increases by 2 dc right after your join, & increases by 1 dc at the end before the join for your next round.
In every ch-2 corner space make 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc
Sl st to join
Stitch counts for rows:
R5 (66) | R6 (78) | R7 (90) | R8 (102) | R9 (114) | R10 (126) | R11 (138) - A reminder that corner chains are not counted in the total stitch count, but your starting ch-3 is counted as 1 dc.
Change to Colour B (Grey).
Changing Colour: Cut the white yarn leaving about 6 inches/15 cm of yarn, and pull yarn tail through sl st. See Image 4. Insert hook into 1st st of previous round, pull new yarn through ensuring there is a yarn tail of about 6 inches/15 cm and start crocheting your next round. Shown in image 5. Yarn ends are weaved in securely at the end of crocheting.
R12: Repeat as described for R6 - 11 (150)
Change to Colour C (Black).
R13: Repeat as described for R6 - 11 (162)
R14: 1 ch, sc in same st, sc in every st including chains, sl st to 1st sc to join (174)
Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all yarn ends.
Ghost Head Top
Use Colour A (White) & 3.5 mm hook.
R1: MC with 6 sc (6)
R2: [inc] x 6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)
R6: sc around (30)
R7: [4 sc, inc] x 6 (36)
R8: sc around (36)
R9: [5 sc, inc] x 6 (42)
R10 - R18: sc around (42)
Cut yarn and fasten off with an invisible finish (there’s a photo tutorial within the PDF pattern for this). Weave in yarn tail and cut.
If using safety eyes, insert them now between R10 & 11 with 7 sts between.
Ghost Head Base
Use Colour A (White) & 3.5 mm hook.
R1: MC with 6 sc (6)
R2: [Inc] x 6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)
R6: [4 sc, inc] x 6 (36)
R7: [5 sc, inc] x 6 (42)
Cut yarn, leaving a longer tail for sewing, approximately 40 cm / 15 inches.
Fasten off with an invisible finish.
Ensure you weave your yarn tail through to an outer stitch (Right Side) ready for sewing together the ghost head top and base.
Crocheted Ghost Eyes (Optional)
If you’ve opted for safety eyes, skip this step.
Use Colour C (Black) & 3.5 mm hook.
Tip: Black yarn is notoriously hard to see when crocheting. To make these next steps easier if you are using black yarn, you can insert a stitch marker into each of chains/stitches as you go to make them unmissable when crocheting.
Start: Ch 4, turn
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work on the other side of the chain (see Image 10) 1 sc, 2 sc in last st, sl st to 1st sc in R2 to join (8)
R2: 1 ch, sc in same st, 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, turn, 3 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sl st to 1st sc in round to join (12)
Cut yarn, leaving a yarn tail approximately 15cm / 5 inches for sewing.
Pull yarn tail through sl st. Using a needle, thread the yarn tail through the next sc.
Make 2 Eyes.
Ghost Lovey Assembly
Step 1: Attach Ghost Head to Ghost Base
Stuff ghost head lightly
Pin ghost head to ghost base
Weave up through FLO of ghost head top & both loops of sc on ghost head base.
Weave down through both loops of sc of ghost head base & FLO of head top.
Once you've sewn half way around, finish firmly stuffing the head.
Continue sewing until you reach where you started. Do not fasten off as the yarn tail will be used for attaching the head to the blanket.
Step 2: Sew on Crocheted Eyes (If Applicable)
Insert pins into the centre of the eyes between R10 - 11 of the head with 7 sts between each pin.
Use additional pins to fix eyes in place.
Sew around each eye securely by weaving into each sc of the eye and into a st directly underneath on the head. Hide yarn tails in head.
Step 3: Embroider the mouth
Using black embroidery thread, embroider a mouth to the right of the eyes (your right - when ghost is facing you). A full picture tutorial for embroidering the mouth is included within the PDF pattern.
Step 4: Sew Ghost Head to Comforter
Ghost head should be sewn to the bottom dc stitches of the blanket's R3. Place pins in the two corner stitches of this row to indicate positioning.
Use yarn tail from ghost head to sew the head to the comforter by weaving. Weaving technique starts by going down through FLO of ghost head top, both sc loops of ghost head base, and in dc of comforter.
Then weave up through next dc of comforter, both sc loops of ghost head base, and FLO of ghost head top.
Once complete, hide yarn tail securely in the head, and you're finished!
