12 Free Christmas Ornament Crochet Patterns

Get 12 free ornament crochet patterns ideal for your Christmas Tree.

The free Christmas crochet patterns listed on this page are all my own designs and were part of the twelve days of Christmas crochet campaign I ran last year. One free Christmas ornament crochet pattern was released each day between the 1st and 12th of December 2022. It was my way of celebrating the end of a really fun crochet year, and also a wee gift I wanted to give you to say thank you for your support and for following along with this crochet journey of mine.

Originally, this is the blog post I created to announce each of the free Christmas ornament crochet patterns each day that they were released. After all, each of the patterns were a complete surprise until their release day.

Now, however, all twelve free Christmas ornament crochet patterns are available for anyone and everyone to access and use as they wish. This is a round-up blog post however, so simply click the image or title of the crochet pattern below to go to the full free written pattern on my website.

If you would prefer to avoid the ads, I’ve also included links to my Ravelry and Etsy stores where you can purchase the PDF patterns.

I hope you have fun and don’t forget to share your crocheted Christmas tree decorations with me on social media using the hashtag #ChristmasWithCillaCrochets. I can’t wait to see your makes and what colours you choose!

Day 1: Christmas Tree Ornament

This Christmas Tree Ornament free crochet pattern works up quickly. While the skill level is intermediate, it also works as an easy crochet pattern if you decide to skip the surface slip stitches, which are completely optional.

For this pattern, you’ll need some DK yarn in one main colour for your Christmas tree. The two other colours (or one if you decide for them to be the same) can be found from your stash of scrap yarn for around the edges and the tinsel.

The great thing about this pattern is that there is not much sewing required at all!

Don’t forget to grab your free Christmas Tree Ornament crochet pattern here. I can’t wait to see your makes!

Day 2: Love Heart Christmas Ornament

The Love Heart Christmas Ornament is an easy crochet pattern that uses even less yarn than Day 1’s decoration. You’ll only need two yarn colours for this project, and while I’ve used DK yarn, you can alter the yarn weight to suit your preference (just remember to adjust your hook size too).

The construction is similar to the Christmas tree ornament, where the majority of this pattern is worked back and forth in rows. One of my most favourite features is that this project only uses basic crochet stitches, and there’s also minimal sewing (except for weaving in your yarn ends).

Without further ado, be sure to get your free Love Heart Christmas Tree Ornament here.

Day 3: Candle Christmas Ornament

Introducing day three’s free crochet pattern, the Candle Christmas Ornament! This crochet pattern is extremely easy, and is one of the quickest of the twelve decorations to make. It also uses a lot less yarn than the other two Christmas ornaments that have been revealed so far!

The colour change within this crochet pattern also calls for fastening off one colour and joining in a new colour, so there’s no need to be switching between yarns as you crochet. Making the pattern that little bit easier.

Lastly, I have to tell you a little secret… I’m personally not a massive fan of the colour scheme I chose for the candle. However, it does look good amongst all the other decorations. So seriously, I cannot wait to see what creative colour schemes you come up with for this quick make!

Day 4: Bell Christmas Ornament

Can you hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing, ring ting tingle-ing?

Day 4’s free Christmas ornament crochet pattern is here, and it’s a bell!

This Bell Christmas Ornament uses more techniques than the above ornaments as it also includes having to not only crochet back and forth in rows, but use a magic circle (or magic loop) too. It is however, still an easy and super quick ornament to make (win!).

For this ornament, we’re also back down to just two colours, or one colour if you decide to use the same colour for the trimming. Yarn scraps are seriously great for these little makes.

I hope you enjoy crocheting this wee bell! Get the pattern here.

Day 5: Christmas Gift Ornament

The fifth free crochet pattern this December is a Christmas Gift Ornament. I hope you like it!

This wee Christmas Gift looks a little more challenge, but looks can be deceiving. This crochet pattern works up super quickly and is an easy pattern to make. It looks slightly more complicated due to the different layers involved, but all of these are explained clearly in the pattern, including photos to help you through.

Of course, if you have any questions at all as you crochet, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any stage. I hope you like this wee Christmas Gift! Don’t forget to get your free crochet pattern here.

Day 6: Christmas Stocking Ornament

Day 6 of the Crochet Crew Countdown to Christmas brings this adorable Christmas Stocking Ornament.

This ornament has to be one of my favourites. Not just because of how it looks, but how the pattern came together to form the stocking shape. It’s also a super easy pattern that works up quite quickly with minimal sewing.

As for colours, I’ve swapped back to a white yarn with the berry yarn (three colours in total), but of course you can use two colours if you prefer.

Be sure to get your free crochet pattern here. I can’t wait to see your makes!

Day 7: Bauble Christmas Ornament

Day Seven’s free crochet pattern is here! And it’s none other than a traditional Bauble Christmas Ornament. Or in this case, a not-so-traditional Bauble Christmas Ornament (because it’s flat).

This Christmas ornament is one of the most simple crochet patterns out of the twelve, however it does use a mix of techniques. Some of the pattern requires you to work in continuous rounds, and there is a little bit of the pattern that requires you to crochet back and forth in rows. It is extremely simple to pick up however, as the pattern explains these steps as you go through.

Don’t forget to get your free pattern here. I hope you like it!

Day 8: Winter Hat Christmas Ornament

This Winter Hat Christmas Ornament is your free crochet pattern for Day Eight!

This pattern goes back to working solely back and forth in rows and is super simple but can be dressed up with some colour creativity. I cannot wait to see what you do with it!

The only tricky bit is understanding your Back and Front Loops. But remember, don’t overcomplicate it - your front loops are the ones facing you when you are crocheting, and your back loops are the ones farthest away from you.

Day 9: Mitten Christmas Ornament

Day Nine’s free crochet pattern is here and will help you make an adorable Mitten Christmas Ornament of your own.

This one is another one of my favourite of the twelve decorations. It’s a super simple pattern, but there’s nothing quite like watching that shape come to life as you crochet. It’s just like magic!

You’ll need three yarn colours for this pattern, but using your yarn scraps work just fine!

I hope you enjoy this pattern, and don’t forget to get your free copy on the blog here.

Day 10: Christmas Cracker Ornament

This Christmas Cracker Ornament is Day Ten’s free crochet pattern!

While this crochet pattern is an intermediate level, it only has this rating due to some additional stitches and the technique used to make the wavy ends of each cracker. The stitches are still quite basic, with the addition of a half double crochet, double crochet stitch, and some tight squeezes.

I can’t believe this is the 3rd last free crochet pattern until our 12 Days of Christmas Crocheting is complete, but I hope you’ve been enjoying all of these decorations so far!

Don’t forget to get your free Christmas Cracker pattern here.

Day 11: Star Ornament

Day Eleven’s free crochet pattern is for a Star Ornament, ideal for those Christmas trees!

This is an easy make that involves crocheting a magic circle (or magic loop) and working back and forth in rows. It is also one of the larger ornaments of all the twelve.

Like all the decorations so far, this star ornament is made by crocheting two flat pieces, that are then joined together by crocheting around the sides, which is stuffed as you go.

Get your crochet pattern here. I hope you like it!

Day 12: Christmas House

Whether you call this a Gingerbread House, Santa’s Grotto, or a Winter Cottage, this little House Christmas Ornament’s free crochet pattern is the largest (once made) of all twelve Christmas crochet ornaments.

I thought this would be quite fitting for our last Ornament of the twelve, since for me, Christmas is all about love and family in all its forms.

But if we want to get specific, as a crocheter, home is where I’m comfortable. It’s where my yarn and my hooks are after all! Of course, we can crochet anywhere, but as Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home”.

I hope you like today’s Christmas ornament, and don’t forget to get your free pattern here.

What other Christmas crochet patterns can I expect?

Since this is a surprise (think of it as a 12-Days of Christmas advent calendar just for crocheters), I can’t tell you too much about each ornament.

I can however tell you that each ornament is a seasonal festive shape and has been made with a loop so it can be hung in pride of place on your Christmas tree. All ornaments are also stuffed giving them a 3D appearance, however the majority are worked flat (back and forth in rows).

Are the Christmas ornaments difficult to crochet?

Each Christmas ornament crochet pattern ranges in difficulty from easy to intermediate.

All do require some existing knowledge of crochet, but most beginners will be able to tackle all 12 Christmas decorations without a hitch.

It will help if you know the following stitches and techniques:

  • Crochet back and forth in rows

  • Magic circle/loop

  • Chain stitch

  • Single crochet

  • Slip stitch

  • Surface slip stitch (Optional)

  • Basic embroidery (Optional)

Of course, if you have any questions at all as you go through the patterns, you can reach out to me at any stage via email, Instagram, or Facebook.

What materials will I need for all 12 patterns?

If you’d like to get yourself prepared in advance of the crochet 12-day advent starting, here’s a simple list of what you’ll need to make each ornament:

  • DK Yarn in 2 or 3 colours (approx. 15 grams/38 meters/41.5 yards at the most for each ornament). I’ve been using a mixture of Ricorumi DK and Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK. You can however change yarn weight/material to your liking, but this will impact the hook size you need to use and the size of your final makes.

  • 2.5mm Crochet Hook (or a crochet hook smaller than what’s recommended on your yarn label)

  • Stuffing

  • Stitch marker

  • Needle

  • Scissors

  • Pins (Optional)

How do I know when a new Christmas crochet pattern is published?

So you’re up-to-date with each new crochet pattern that’s published, you can either bookmark this webpage for later and visit it each day between the 1st & 12th of December.

Alternatively, you can sign-up to my mailing list via the form at the top of this page and I’ll pop you an email as soon as each new Christmas ornament crochet pattern is released. If you’ve missed any however, simply come back to this page and you’ll find all the patterns that are published listed here.
