Freya the Unicorn Free Crochet Pattern

The free crochet pattern for Freya the Unicorn is easy to follow and quick to make. This unicorn amigurumi also requires minimal sewing and not a lot of yarn. Yarn scraps will work great!
While I used a chenille DK yarn for this Easter egg amigurumi, but it’s also been tried and tested with cotton and acrylic yarn too, which work just as well!

Crochet pattern information
This section outlines everything you need to know before you start crocheting Freya the Unicorn. From materials, to abbreviations and tips and tricks, be sure to read this information before starting this Easter crochet pattern.
Materials needed
DK chenille yarn in five colours of your choice. For reference, I used Rico Design Ricorumi Nilli Nilli. The colours I used are listed below, along with the colour code used in the pattern and the amounts of yarn required in brackets.
Colour A - Dark Purple (2 grams = 5.2 m / 5.7 yds)
Colour B - Light Purple (5 grams = 13 m / 14.3 yds)
Colour C - Yellow (1 gram = 2.6 m / 2.9 yds)
Colour D - Pink (1 gram = 2.6 m / 2.9 yds)
Colour E - Green (1 gram = 2.6 m / 2.9 yds)
Crochet hook size 2.5 mm (US B or C)
Stuffing
Needle
Scissors
Pins
Stitch marker
Safety eyes 6 mm
Amigurumi Unicorn Size
Using the yarn mentioned above with a 2.5 mm hook, the amigurumi Unicorn’s body turned out to be 7 cm / 2.8 " high & 4.5 cm / 1.8 " wide. Please note the size of your make will vary depending on your hook size, the yarn you use, and your tension/gauge.
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however keep tension consistent throughout. For reference my gauge was:
6 sc stitches on 2.5 cm / 1 "
6 rows on 2.5 cm / 1 "
Crochet pattern abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
R# - Row/round number
st - Stitch
ch - Chain
sl st - Slip stitch
mc - Magic circle
sc - Single crochet
inc - Increase
dec - Decrease
sk - Skip
[...] x ... - Repeat the sequence of stitches in brackets x-times
(...) - Total number of stitches at the end of each row/round
Crochet tips and additional pattern information
Pattern level: Intermediate
Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
Eyes: Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age. As an alternative, you can crochet or embroider the eyes.
Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round/row to keep track of the number of stitches.
Decreases: I recommend using the invisible decrease method for all amigurumi pieces throughout.
No-sew: The feet and ears are attached to the body while you crochet. Therefore, you will need to crochet the feet and ears before you crochet the body. This is explained clearly throughout the pattern.

Freya the Unicorn Crochet Pattern
Feet (Make 2)
Using Colour A (Dark Purple) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
R1: mc with 5 sc (5)
R2: [inc] x 5 (10)
R3: sc around (10)
R4: ch 1, hold sides together and join with 5 sc (5)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Using needle, weave yarn tail into the foot to hide.
Repeat above steps to make a second foot.
Ears (Make 2)
Using Colour A (Dark Purple) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
R1: mc with 4 sc (4)
R2: [inc, sc] x 2 (6)
R3: [inc, 2 sc] x 2 (8)
R4: [inc, 3 sc] x 2 (10)
R5: [inc, 4 sc] x 2 (12)
R6: [inc, 5 sc] x 2 (14)
R7: [inc, 6 sc] x 2 (16)
R8: ch 1, hold sides together and join with 8 sc (8)
R9: ch 1, pinch ends of ear together so the last row folds in half and join with 4 sc (4)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Using needle, weave yarn tail into ear to hide.
Repeat steps above to make second ear.
Body
Using Colour B (Light Purple) Yarn.
Stuff firmly throughout.
R1: mc with 8 sc (8)
R2: [inc] x 8 (16)
R3: [sc, inc] x 8 (24)
In the next round, you will attach the feet to the body while you crochet. To do this, line up the foot to the body when instructed to do so. *Insert your hook into the first st of the foot, then into the st of the body. Complete sc as per normal. Repeat from * until all sts of the foot are crocheted to consecutive sts of the body.

R4: 1 sc, crochet foot to body with 5 sc, 1 sc, crochet other foot to body with 5 sc, 12 sc (24) - see image 7
R5: [2 sc, inc] x 8 (32)
R6 - R12: sc around (32) - 7 rounds
R13: [2 sc, dec] x 8 (24)
R14: sc around (24)
If using safety eyes, insert them now between R11 & R12 of the head above the feet. There should be 5 sts between the eyes.
R15: [2 sc, dec] x 6 (18)
In R16, the ears are crocheted to the body using the same technique we used to attach the feet. The ears should sit on either side of the body with the feet in the middle. Ensure the open part of the ear is facing the front of the body (where the feet are).
See under R16 for the detailed st count I used. However, please note that placement of the ears is more important and this may need to be changed depending on your tension/positioning.
R16: sc around joining both ears to either side of the body as you crochet (18)
Detailed st count for R16 (optional): Join ear to body with 4 sc, 5 sc, join ear to body with 4 sc, 5 sc (18)

Finish stuffing.
R19: [dec] x 6 (6)
Cut yarn leaving a short tail for sewing. Using a needle, weave through FLO of final 6 sc. Pull tight to close. Weave yarn tail into body to hide.
Freya the Unicorn’s body completed.
Mouth
Using Colour A (Dark Purple) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start: Ch 5
In the next round, you'll crochet around both sides of the ch. Chs and sl sts are not counted in the total st counts.
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook and sc in the next 4 sts, continue to crochet on other side with 1 sc in the next 4 sts, sl st to first st in round to join, ch 1 (8)
R2: [inc, sc in next 2 sts, inc] x 2, sl st to first st in round to join (12)
Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. I recommend using an invisible fasten off.
Unicorn Horn
Using Colour C (Yellow) Yarn.
Stuff this piece lightly throughout.
Leave a long yarn tail before your slip knot as this will be used for sewing during assembly.
Start: Ch 10
Sl st to first ch to form a loop then Ch 1.
R1: sc in 10 sts, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (10)
R2: 4 sc, dec, 4 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (9)
R3: 4 sc, dec, 3 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (8)
R4: 3 sc, dec, 3 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (7)
R5: 2 sc, dec, 3 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (6)
R6: 2 sc, dec, 2 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join (5)
Cut yarn leaving a short tail for sewing. Using a needle, weave through FLO of final 5 sc. Pull tight to close. Weave yarn tail into horn to hide.
Mane
Using Colour D (Pink) & E (Green) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start with Colour D.
Start: Ch 16 - This is referred to as the ‘Main Chain’ in R1
In R1, you will crochet the mane. While this is a continuous piece, the instructions have been written on different lines to make reading easier.
R1: Follow the next steps:
Start in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 7 sts of main chain, ch 5
In 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 4 sts, sl st in next st on main chain
sl st in next 3 sts on main chain, ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 6 sts, sl st in next st on main chain
sl st in next 3 sts on main ch, ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 6 sts
Start crocheting on the other side of the chain with 1 sc in main chain and change to Colour E (Green) yarn and cut Colour D (Pink) yarn leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
ch 9, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 8 sts, sl st in next 2 sts on main chain
ch 7, start in 2nd ch from hook and sl st in next 6 sts, sl st in next 4 sts on main chain
ch 6, in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 5 sts back down ch, sl st in next 2 sts of main chain
ch 5, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 4 sts, sl st in same st of main chain
Cut Colour E (Green) leaving a long yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. Sew in the two starting yarn tails into the mane. The longer yarn tails will be used to sew the mane to the body in assembly.

Tail
Using Colour D (Pink) & E (Green) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start with Colour D.
Start: ch 16
In R1, you will make the tail. This includes alternating colours between Colour D & E yarn. While this is a continuous piece, the instructions have been written on different lines to make reading the steps easier.
R1: Follow the next steps:
In 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 14 sts, sc in last st and change to Colour E (15)
ch 15, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 14 sts, sc to first st in the previous chain and change to Colour D (15)
ch 12, in 2nd ch from hook sl st in next 11 sts
Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. Sew in all other yarn tails.
Completed unicorn tail.
Freya the Unicorn Amigurumi Assembly Instructions
Step 1: Sew mouth to body
Using yarn tail from mouth, sew the mouth to the front of the body. The mouth should sit over R7 to R10 of the body. Using embroidery thread, embroider nostrils to the mouth piece (optional).
Step 2: Sew horn to body
Using yarn tail from horn, sew horn to the front of the body in between the ears. The horn should sit over R14 to R17 of the body with the shaped section at the bottom facing the front.
Step 3: Sew mane to body
Using longer yarn tails from the mane, sew the main chain of the mane to the body just behind the horn. The mane should sit wrapped around the back of the horn with the Colour E (Green) side closest to the horn and a chain of each colour showing on either side of the horn at the front.
Step 4: Sew tail to body
Using long yarn tail from the tail, sew the tail to the back of the body. The tail should be sewn between R4 & R5 of the body at the back. Twist the three yarn tails together roughly so they appear intertwined.
