Percival the Phoenix Free Crochet Pattern
Use this Phoenix free crochet pattern to make a cute egg-shaped amigurumi - the perfect crochet project for this Easter weekend.
The free crochet pattern for Percival the Phoenix is easy to follow and quick to make. This phoenix amigurumi also requires minimal sewing and not a lot of yarn! Yarn scraps will work great!
While I used a chenille DK yarn for this Easter egg ami, it’s been tried and tested with cotton and acrylic yarn too which work great too!

Crochet pattern information
This section outlines everything you need to know before you start crocheting Percival the Phoenix. From materials, to abbreviations and tips and tricks, be sure to read this information before starting this Easter crochet pattern.
Materials needed
DK chenille yarn in two colours of your choice. For reference, I used Rico Design Ricorumi Nilli Nilli. The colours I used are listed below, along with the colour code used in the pattern and the amounts of yarn required in brackets.
Colour A - Red (7 grams = 18.2 m / 20 yds)
Colour B - Yellow (2 grams = 5 m / 6 yds)
Crochet hook size 2.5 mm (US B or C)
Stuffing
Needle
Scissors
Pins
Stitch marker
Safety eyes 6 mm
Amigurumi Phoenix Size
Using the yarn mentioned above with a 2.5 mm hook, the amigurumi Phoenix's body turned out to be 7 cm / 2.8 " high & 16 cm / 6.3 " wide from wing tip to wing tip. Please note the size of your make will vary depending on your hook size, the yarn you use, and your tension/gauge.
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however keep tension consistent throughout. For reference my gauge was:
6 sc stitches on 2.5 cm / 1 "
6 rows on 2.5 cm / 1 "
Crochet pattern abbreviations
This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
R# - Row/round number
st - Stitch
ch - Chain
sl st - Slip stitch
mc - Magic circle
sc - Single crochet
hdc - Half double crochet
dc - Double crochet
tr - Treble crochet
inc - Increase
dec - Decrease
sk - Skip
[...] x ... - Repeat the sequence of stitches in brackets x-times
(...) - Total number of stitches at the end of each row/round
Crochet tips and additional pattern information
Pattern level: Intermediate
Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
Eyes: Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age. As an alternative, you can crochet or embroider the eyes. There is a simple embroidery tutorial included on page 12 of this pattern.
Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round/row to keep track of the number of stitches.
Decreases: I recommend using the invisible decrease method for all amigurumi pieces throughout.
No-sew: The feet and beak are attached to the body while you crochet. Therefore, you will need to crochet the feet and beak before you crochet the body. This is explained clearly throughout the pattern, and a step-by-step photo tutorial is also included on page 11 to show you how this is done.

Percival the Phoenix Crochet Pattern
Beak
Using Colour B (Yellow) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
R1: mc with 4 sc (4)
R2: [sc, inc] x 2 (6)
R3: [2 sc, inc] x 2 (8)
R4: ch 1, hold sides together and join with 4 sc (4)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Using a needle, weave yarn tail into the beak to hide.
Feet (Make 2)
Using Colour B (Yellow) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start: Ch 6
In R1, you will crochet around both sides of the ch. Sl sts and chs are not counted in total st counts.
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 5 sts, working on the other side of the ch - sc in next 5 sts, sl st in 1st sc in round to join, ch 1 (10)
R2: 1 sc in each st around, sl st to 1st sc in round, ch 1 (10)
R3: [1 sc, dec, 2 sc] x 2, sl st to 1st sc in round, ch 1 (8)
R4: [2 sc, dec] x 2, sl st to 1st sc in round, ch 1 (6)
R5: hold sides together and join with 3 sc (3)
Cut yarn and fasten off. Using a needle, weave yarn tail into foot to hide.
Repeat steps to make a second foot.
Body
Using Colour A Yarn (Red).
No sew technique for crocheting the feet to the body.
Stuff firmly throughout.
R1: mc with 8 sc (8)
R2: [inc] x 8 (16)
R3: [sc, inc] x 8 (24)
In the next round, you will attach the feet to the body while you crochet. To do this, line up the foot to the body when instructed to do so. *Insert your hook into the first st of the foot, then into the st of the body. Complete sc as per normal. Repeat from * until all sts of the foot are crocheted to consecutive sts of the body.
R4: 3 sc, crochet foot to body with 3 sc, 2 sc, crochet other foot to body with 3 sc, 13 sc (24)
R5: [2 sc, inc] x 8 (32)
R6 - R9: sc around (32) - 4 rounds
In R10, the beak is crocheted to the body using the same technique we used to attach the feet. The beak should sit over the middle section of the feet.
See under R10 for the detailed st count I used. However, please note that placement of the beak is more important and this may need to be changed depending on your tension/positioning.
R10: sc around joining beak to the body as you crochet (32)
Detailed st count for R10 (optional): 8 sc, join beak to body with 4 sc, 20 sc (32)
Crocheting the beak to the body.
R11 - 12: sc around (32) - 2 rounds
R13: [2 sc, dec] x 8 (24)
R14: sc around (24)
Insert safety eyes between R11 & R12 of the head above the feet. There should be 5 sts between the eyes.
R15: [2 sc, dec] x 6 (18)
R16: sc around (18)
R17: [sc, dec] x 6 (12)
R18: sc around (12)
Finish stuffing.
R19: [dec] x 6 (6)
Cut yarn leaving a short tail for sewing. Using a needle, weave through FLO of final 6 sc. Pull tight to close. Weave yarn tail into body to hide.
Completed crocheted body of Percival the Phoenix.
Wings (Make 2)
Using Colour A (Red) & B (Yellow) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start with Colour A.
Start: Ch 15
In R1, you will crochet around both sides of the ch. Sl sts and chs are not counted in total st counts.
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 14 sts, working on the other side of the ch - sc in next 14 sts, sl st in 1st sc in round to join (28)
R2: ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, sl st to 1st sc in round to join (28)
R3: ch 1, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, dc in next 3 sts, tr in next 4 sts, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 5 sts, sl st to 1st sc in round to join (28)
At the end of R4, you will change to Colour B Yarn (Yellow) in the last yarn over of the final st. At this stage cut Colour A Yarn (Red) leaving a long yarn tail for sewing, as this is what we will use to attach the wing to the body.
R4: ch 1, hold sides together and join with 14 sc, change to Colour B Yarn (Yellow) in the last yarn over of the 14th sc and ch 1 (14)
Turn to crochet in the other direction.
R5: [sc and hdc in 1 st, hdc and sc in next st] x 7 (28)
Cut Colour B (Yellow) Yarn and fasten off. Using a tapestry needle, weave the Colour B yarn tails into the wing to hide.
Repeat steps above to make a second wing.
Comb
Using Colour A (Red) & B (Yellow) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start with Colour A.
Start: Ch 6
In R1, you will make the entire comb. This includes alternating colours between Colour A & B yarn. While this is a continuous piece, the instructions have been written on different lines to make reading the instructions easier.
Please note: Do not cut the yarn when changing colours.
R1: Follow the next steps:
Start in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in last st and change to Colour B
ch 6, start in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in last st and change to Colour A
ch 6, start in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 4 sts, sl st in last st and change to Colour B
ch 6, start in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in last st and change to Colour A
sl st to sc in at the bottom of the first comb chain using Colour A yarn.
Cut Colour A yarn leaving a long yarn tail for sewing and pull the yarn tail all the way through the sl st
Cut Colour B leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Sew in the two starting yarn tails into the middle of the comb.
The longer yarn tails will be used to sew the comb to the body in assembly.
Percival the Phoenix’s Comb complete.
Tail Feathers
Using Colour A (Red) & B (Yellow) Yarn.
Do not stuff.
Start with Colour A.
R1: mc with 6 sc (6)
In R2, several chains are crocheted off from the magic circle to create the tail feathers. To make it easier to read, this section has been split on to different lines with different total st counts. Chains and slip stitches are counted in total st counts.
R2: Follow the next steps:
ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 6 sts, sl st to first sc in mc to join and change to Colour B (14)
ch 11, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 10 sts, sl st to next sc in mc and change to Colour A (22)
ch 13, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 12 sts, sl st to next sc in mc and change to Colour B (26)
Image 18 and 19 shows the section above completed plus the ch 11 from the next bullet point.
ch 11, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 10 sts, sl st to next sc in mc and change to Colour A (22)
ch 7, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 6 sts, sl st to next sc in mc and change to Colour B (14)
ch 5, in 2nd ch from hook sc in next 4 sts, sl st to last sc in mc (this is the sc under your first ch in this round) (10)
Cut yarn and fasten off leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing.
Sew in your starting yarn tail and the Colour A yarn tail to the magic circle, leaving the longer Colour B yarn tail end for final assembly.
Completed tail feathers.
Percival the Phoenix Amigurumi Assembly Instructions
Step 1: Sew comb to top of body
Using longer yarn tails from comb, sew the comb on the top of the body in the middle.
Step 2: Sew wings to either side of the body
Using yarn tails from wings, sew the Colour A (Red) section of each wing to either side of the body. The wings should be sewn over R8 & R13 of the body on a slight angle with the top of the wing approximately 3 sts away from the eye and the bottom of the wing approximately 7 sts away from the side of the beak.
Step 3: Sew tail feathers to back of body
Using longer yarn tail from tail feathers, sew the magic circle of the tail feathers to the back of the body. The longer feathers should sit closer to the top of the body and the shorter feathers should sit closer to the bottom of the body. The magic circle should be sewn between R4 and R5 of the body in the middle of the back.
