Cassie the Cow free crochet pattern

This free crochet pattern for Cassie the Cow makes an egg-shaped amigurumi ideal for Easter.

Cassie the Cow is the forth addition to the Eggy Farm Friends Easter crochet collection.

This cow amigurumi pattern is an intermediate level crochet pattern written in US terms.

A huge benefit of this pattern is that minimal sewing is involved. The feet, ears and horns are all crocheted on as you go, making this little a quick crochet project.

While the free crochet pattern for Cassie the Cow can be found on this webpage below, if you would prefer to purchase the PDF pattern to avoid the ads or use whilst offline, it’s available in my Etsy and Ravelry stores.

In the meantime, I wanted to get this free crochet pattern out before Easter Sunday. I hope you enjoy it!

Happy Crocheting!

Cow Crochet Pattern Information

Please read this section carefully before you start to crochet Cassie the Cow.

Amigurumi size and gauge

Gauge is not required for this pattern. Using the crochet hook and yarn recommended in the materials list below, Cassie the Cow’s body will turn out to be approximately 7 cm / 2.8 " high & 5 cm / 2 " wide. I do tend to crochet quite tightly however, so your Cassie may turn out slightly larger than this.

Materials you need to crochet Cassie the Cow

Here is the list of materials you’ll need to crochet Cassie the Cow:

  • Yarn: DK chenille yarn in three colours. I used Sirdar Happy Chenille in the following colours. Amounts are in brackets.

    • A - White (10 grams = 25.3 m / 27.6 yds)

    • B - Pink (2 grams = 5 m / 5.4 yds)

    • C - Blue (4 grams = 10.2 m / 11.1 yds)

  • Crochet Hook: size 2.5 mm (Use US B or C if 2.5mm is unavailable). If you decide to use a different yarn, use a hook size smaller than the size recommended on the yarn label. This will ensure your stuffing doesn’t appear through your stitches.

  • Other materials:

    • Stuffing

    • Needle

    • Scissors

    • Stitch marker

    • Safety eyes 6 mm

    • Pins (optional)

    • Black embroidery thread (optional)

Read this before you start crocheting

This crochet pattern is written in US terms.

Checking your gauge is not required. To ensure your stuffing doesn’t show through the stitches, use a hook that is smaller than the recommended size for your yarn weight.

Use a stitch marker throughout to keep track of your stitches.

All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.

Some body parts are attached to the body while you crochet. As a result, I recommend crocheting the feet and ears before you crochet the body. The no-sew technique is also explained clearly throughout the pattern.

Bobble stitch: To complete the bobble stitch: *ch 1, yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, yarn over, pull through first two loops on your hook.** Now there will be 2 loops on your hook. Repeat from * to ** until there are 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops to finish the Bobble stitch.

See under R14 for the detailed st count I used. However, please note that placement of the ears is more important and this may need to be changed depending on your tension/positioning.

See completed body in the image below.

Final assembly instructions

Step 1: Sew nose to body

Using longer yarn tail from nose, sew the nose to the body. The nose sits in the centre of the face over R7 to R10 of the body. It should sit just below the eyes. See image below.

Step 2: Add a tail

Cut approximately 20 cm / 7.8 " of Colour B Yarn (Pink) and Colour C Yarn (Blue). Using a needle, weave the yarn into a middle st between R5 and R6 of the body at the back. Leave a yarn tail on either side of the st and create a slip knot with your crochet hook. Ch 5 using two strands of Colour B and C Yarn, then fasten off. Cut the two strands slightly shorter and weave in the remaining yarn tails to the cows body to hide. See completed tail in the image below.
