Free Crochet Banana Pattern

This amigurumi banana was the second crochet pattern I ever designed following the launch of my Succulent Strawberries crochet pattern. It’s a fun and quick banana crochet pattern that’s great for the kids (or craft fair sales!).

Banana Crochet Pattern Information
Materials you need to make the Beaming Banana
Here are the materials you’ll need to crochet this free crochet banana pattern.
Yarn: Aran / Worsted Weight Yarn in the following colours:
Yellow
White
Light Green
Brown
Crochet Hook: 4 mm crochet hook. If you decide to use a different yarn, use a hook size smaller than the size recommended on the yarn label. This will ensure your stuffing won’t appear through your stitches.

Before you get started
This banana crochet pattern has been written in US terms.
The banana base is worked in continuous rounds, however the peels are crocheted in rows.
Checking your gauge is not required in this pattern. To ensure your stuffing doesn’t show through the stitches, use a hook that is smaller than the recommended size for your yarn weight.
Use a stitch marker throughout to keep track of your stitches.
Stitch explanations
Increase (Inc): Work 2 stitches into the same stitch.
Decrease (Dec): Work 1 crochet stitch to merge 2 stitches together. I use the invisible decrease technique throughout this pattern, however it isn’t required. Use whichever method works best for you.
Back Loop Only (BLO): Crochet into the back loop only of the crochet stitch.
Front Loop Only (FLO): Crochet into the front loop only of the crochet stitch.
Beaming Banana Crochet Pattern
Banana Base
Start with Dark Brown.
We are crocheting from the bottom of the banana up in continuous rounds.
R1: start 8 sc in a magic circle (8)
R2: (sc in next st, inc in next st) x 4 (12)
Tip: Now is a good time to sew in your yarn tail into the inside of the magic circle to secure it. I recommend sewing around the entire magic circle (all 6 sc), turning, skipping one sc, and sewing back the opposite way through 5 sc.
Change to Light Green yarn.
R3: sc in all 12 st (12)
R4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) x 4 (16)
R5: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) x 4 (20)
R6: (sc in next 4 st, inc in next st) x 4 (24)
Change to Yellow yarn.
R7 - R20: sc in all 24 st (24)
Tip: Now is a good time to start stuffing the banana.
R21: inc in next st, sc in next 9 st, 2 dec, sc in next 9 st, inc in next st (24)
R22: sc in all 24 st (24)
R23: inc in next st, sc in next 9 st, 2 dec, sc in next 9 st, inc in next st (24)

Change to White yarn.
R28: BLO sc in all 24 st (24)

Tip: Now is a good time to completely finish stuffing the banana. Fit as much stuffing in, but the stitches should not stretch so that the stuffing shows.
R40: dec 6 times (6)
Fasten off leaving a short yarn tail (approximately 3 inches/7cm long).
After fastening off, sew the yarn tail into the FLO of all 6 sc using a weaving motion (up through sc 1, down into sc 2, and repeat until the end). Tighten by pulling on the yarn tail - this should close the gap at the end of your work. Then secure the yarn tail by sewing it into the banana itself.
Banana Peel 1
Tip: I’ve created the banana peels so the nice side is on the outside of the banana peel (facing down) - just like a real banana. However, if you would like to display the nice side of the peel on the inside (the bit you will see when the banana peels are hanging down), you will need to start with your hook pointing downwards. If you choose to do this, insert your hook under the last stitch of R27 in FLO with your hook pointing towards the yellow end of the banana. Crochet peels by following the same pattern outlined below.
Attach yellow yarn to the first st in FLO of last yellow row (R27). This is where you will see a slight variation along the top yellow line, where it isn’t completely straight.
Insert your hook under the stitch. The top of your crochet hook should be pointing towards the white yarn (top of banana).
Please note: Working in rows not rounds. The chain stitches do not count as stitches in these rows.
R1: 8 sc in FLO, ch 1, turn (8)
R2 - R10: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
R11: dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)
R12: dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)
R13: 4 sc, ch 1, turn (4)
R14: 2 dec, ch 1, turn (2)
R15: dec (1)
Fasten off.
Sew yarn tail into banana peel 1 so it is hidden.
Banana Peel 2
Attach yellow yarn to R27 in FLO of st 9, which should be the same st that the first row of the first banana peel ended on (st 9). The top of your crochet hook, should be under the stitch pointing upwards towards the white yarn (top of banana). Repeat pattern instructions for Banana Peel 1.
Banana Peel 3
Attach yellow yarn to R27 FLO of st 17. This should be the same st that your last banana peel’s first row ended on. Repeat pattern instructions for Banana Peel 1.
For R1, your last sc of Banana peel 3 should end in the first st (where you joined the yarn) for Banana peel 1.
Banana Peel Finish Touches
This section is about tidying up the banana peel edges so they look smooth. To do this, we are going to SC around all banana peels in one go.
Please note: The pattern in this section will refer to steps as R1, R2 etc. However this is only to make it easier to read. This section should be only one row all around the banana peels.
Attach yellow yarn to the 1st st of the side of Banana Peel 1. Hook should be pointing upwards (e.g. so top of crochet hook is pointing towards white yarn).
R1: 15 sc evenly along the side of banana peel 1 (15)
R2: 3 sc in top st of banana peel 1 (3)
R3: going down the other side of the banana peel 1, 15 sc evely along the side of banana peel 1 (15)
R4: 1 sc in the bottom FLO st of the banana itself (on the banana base, not the peel) (1)
Repeat R1 - 4 for banana peel 2 and 3, working continuously with no fastening off. Your final sc on banana peel 3, should be in the first st of the FLO on the banana base (i.e. where you first connected your yarn to start banana peel 1).
Fasten off. Sew any yarn ends into the peels and hide/secure the yarn ends inside the banana so they are hidden.
