This free strawberry crochet pattern was the first ever crochet design I made. It’s an easy crochet pattern and there are two strawberries to choose from.

A few months after I first started making amigurumi in January 2020, I became completely obsessed with crocheting and decided to give crochet designing a try. The first item I decided to try and crochet design were strawberries. I chose strawberries because I thought the shapes would be super easy to figure out. The thing I did not anticipate was, as a brand new crochet designer, how difficult it would be to get the proportions right for the bottom and top (the leaves) of the strawberries.

It took me about five tries until I found a shape for both the bottom and top of the strawberry that I was happy with. I was so excited to have finally gotten the proportions for this simple crochet design correct, that I made a second strawberry too. This time, a smaller one.

After designing and writing as many hand-scribbled notes down as possible, I went to Canva and wrote up (on the computer this time) my first ever strawberry crochet pattern. I then put a call out on Instagram for crochet pattern testers and was delighted that there were other crocheters willing to take the time to help a brand new crochet designer out. I’ll never forget their kindness and how helpful they were.

Once I got their feedback, I edited the crochet pattern and published it as a free pattern on this website. To this date (May 2022), my PDF Succulent Strawberry crochet pattern has been downloaded by over 140 people worldwide. Honestly, I have no clue how many people have crocheted these strawberries, but I get an absolute thrill whenever I see them come to life by other crocheters. This was truly the very beginning of my crochet design journey.

Since I’ve now been crochet designing for over two years, I’ve learned a lot more about crochet designing, and of course things have changed in the way I design. As such, earlier this year (in 2022) I remade these Succulent Strawberries and updated the crochet pattern so it is now consistent with all of my other more recent crochet patterns. This includes clearer photos, consistent terminology, but surprisingly no tweaks to the actual pattern itself. This made me so happy.

So enough about the backstory, let’s get to the Succulent Strawberry Crochet Pattern!

dec - Decrease

sl st - Slip stitch

hdc - Half double crochet

dc - Double crochet

sk - Skip

Additional Pattern Information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.

  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.

  • Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.

  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.

  • Stuffing: Unless otherwise stated, stuff all amigurumi parts firmly as you crochet

  • Increase (Inc): Work 2 stitches into the same stitch.
