Crochet Quiz: May 2022

The Crochet Quiz is a fun way to test your crochet knowledge and learn something new about our amazing craft.

May’s crochet quiz went live in my Instagram stories last Friday. Since it disappears after 24-hours, I’m popping the quiz up here for anyone who missed out.

How the crochet quiz works?

The crochet quiz comprises of 10 multiple choice questions. So even if you don’t know the answer, you still have a chance of getting it right!

I aim to run the quiz in my Instagram stories on the last Friday of every month. Occasionally I also run a giveaway alongside the quiz on Instagram. Many members of the crochet community on Instagram play along and share their scores to stories afterwards, which makes it feel a bit more like a community event. But it’s never a competition - it is solely meant as a little bit of fun!

I realise not everyone is on Instagram, and some people just aren’t available during the 24-hours that the quiz is live for. So afterwards, I always post the quiz up on this blog too. Just to make sure no-one misses out.

How to play the crochet quiz?

There are two ways you can play the crochet quiz on the blog. You can either click the button below, which will take you to a Google form. This way you can answer each question and find out the answer (whether you’re right or wrong) in real time. I also don’t ask for any personal information, so it is completely anonymous when you choose to play the quiz this way.

Alternatively, if you prefer to use pen and paper, simply scroll down this page and write down your answers as you go. Just don’t scroll too far as the answers are revealed at the end of this blog post.

I hope you enjoy this month’s Crochet Quiz, and would love to hear what you think! Please do feel free to comment at the end of this post to pass on any feedback or to share your score. I’d really love to hear from you!

The Crochet Quiz Answers

A1. What is the title of this book by Yolonda Jordan?

b) My Pretty Brown Doll

Well done if you got this one right! I found out about this crochet pattern book by a simple Amazon search for new crochet pattern books. This one looks wonderful, however I don’t own it myself (yet!). My Pretty Brown Doll was created by Yolonda Jordan and will help you make unique, customisable African American crochet dolls.

Crochet Quiz Answer to Question 1 - My Pretty Brown Doll by Yolonda Jordan. A crochet pattern book.

A2. What does the abbreviation WS stand for in crochet patterns?

c) Wrong Side

When you make amigurumi there is a right side and a wrong side of your work, because often we're working in the round rather than back and forth in rows. As such ‘WS’ is a common abbreviation used in crochet patterns that means 'Wrong Side'. And you guessed it, ‘RS’ is also a common abbreviation that means 'Right Side'. If you're new to crocheting amigurumi, you can find more helpful amigurumi tips here.

A3. Yarn weights all have a number and a name. What is the number associated with Medium/Worsted Weight yarn?

b) 4

Huge well done if you answered this question correctly! There is actually a standardised measurement for all yarn weights around the world. If you’d like to learn more there’s a great article about the Standard Yarn Weight System outlining all the different weights, their names, and the associated numbers on the Craft Yarn Council website.

A4. Amigurumi originated in which country?

a) Japan

Amigurumi was indeed started in Japan. The word amigurumi is actually derived from two Japanese words - 'ami' which means to crochet or to knit, and 'nuigurumi' which means stuffed doll.

A5. What is this crocheted piece made up of?

d) Granny squares

The crocheted piece pictured below is made up of the very popular crochet motif known as the 'granny square'. You can learn more about granny squares and how to crochet them on SarahMaker’s blog.

A6. What is the 27th prompt for AmiguruMay 2022?

c) Top Tip

This one was a difficult question, especially since May 2022 is now over. AmiguruMay is a yearly Instagram Amigurumi Challenge created by crochet designer Ilaria. 2022 was the forth year the challenge ran, and it was so much fun seeing everyone's posts for each day throughout the month. You can learn more about AmiguruMay 2022 and the prompts here.

A7. Who is the crochet designer and author of the book, Crochet Zodiac Dolls?

a) Carla Mitrani

Crochet Zodiac Dolls was indeed created by crochet designer Carla Mitrani. You may have heard of her other crochet book called Crochet Iconic Women? To discover more of Carla's designs and creations, you can find her on Instagram here.

A8. What does the word ‘Kawaii’ mean in English?

c) Cute

In Japanese, the word kawaii has a means "cute," "tiny," or "lovable."

A9. Gauge is otherwise referred to as what?

d) Tension

When you go to check your gauge, it's essentially about the size/tension of your work. This is extremely important when it comes to making clothing as you always need to check that the size of your stitches matches the designers, otherwise you run the risk of the clothes you crochet not fitting. It's less important with making amigurumi, however your stitch tension will impact the size of your final make.

A10. What is not a type of crochet?

c) Knitting

This one was hopefully an easy one! Knitting is not the same as crochet. Did you know that knitting stitches can be replicated by a machine, however crochet can only be done by a person.

That brings us to the end of the May 2022 Crochet Quiz. I hope you enjoyed it!

Until next time, happy crocheting,

Cilla x
