Free Eggy Farm Friend Crochet Pattern: Hetty the Hen

This free Easter crochet pattern makes a small egg-shaped chicken amigurumi.

Hetty the Hen’s crochet pattern is easy, super quick to make, and minimal sewing is required as the feet and beak are crocheted to the body as you go.

This chicken amigurumi pattern is the second I designed as part of the Eggy Farm Friends series. The first was Peter the Piglet. This series of free crochet patterns are farm animal amigurumi designed in the shape of an egg - ideal for Easter gifts!

If you’d prefer to purchase the PDF crochet pattern for Peter the Piglet, it can be purchased from my Etsy or Ravelry stores. But everything you need to make Peter the Piglet is right here on this blog page. Let’s get started!

Hen Crochet Pattern Information

Materials you need

Here’s what you’ll need to crochet Hetty the Hen:

  • Yarn: DK chenille yarn in three colours. I used Sirdar Happy Chenille in the following colours. Amounts are in brackets.

    • A - White (8 grams = 20.3 m / 22.2 yds)

    • B - Yellow (3 grams = 7.6 m / 8.3 yds)

    • C - Red (4 grams = 10.2 m / 11.2 yds)

  • Crochet Hook: size 2.5 mm (Use US B or C if 2.5mm is unavailable). If you decide to use a different yarn, use a hook size smaller than the size recommended on the yarn label. This will ensure your stuffing doesn’t appear through your stitches.

  • Other materials:

    • Stuffing

    • Needle

    • Scissors

    • Stitch marker

    • Safety eyes 6 mm

    • Pins (optional)

Before you get started

This crochet pattern is written in US terms.

Checking your gauge is not required. To ensure your stuffing doesn’t show through the stitches, use a hook that is smaller than the recommended size for your yarn weight.

Use a stitch marker throughout to keep track of your stitches.

All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.

Some body parts are attached to the body while you crochet. As a result, I recommend crocheting the feet and beak before you crochet the body. The no-sew technique is also explained clearly throughout the pattern.

Sew in your starting yarn tail to the magic circle, leaving the longer yarn tail end for final assembly. See your completed tail feathers below.

Final assembly instructions

Follow these steps to complete your Hetty the Hen amigurumi.

Step 1: Sew comb to top of body

Using longer yarn tail from comb, sew the comb across the top of the body in the middle. The smallest ch of the comb sits at the front of the body between R16 and R17. The longest ch of the comb sits at the back of the body between R15 and R16. See image below.

Sewing the comb to Hetty the Hen

Step 2: Sew tail feathers to back of body

Using longer yarn tail from tail feathers, sew the magic circle of the tail feathers to the back of the body. The longer feathers should sit closer to the top of the body and the shorter feathers should sit closer to the bottom of the body. The magic circle should be sewn between R4 and R5 of the body in the middle of the back. See images below.
